A novel driving assessment combining hazard perception, hazard prediction and theory questions

چکیده

A new hazard test was created using high-fidelity computer animation containing ten hazards. Sixty learner drivers and sixty experienced sat either a hazard-perception version of this (requiring timed responses to materialized hazards) or hazard-prediction variant the (where screen is occluded as begins appear are asked 'What happens next?'). Recent studies have demonstrated that prediction format outperforms perception naturalistic video, but there has not yet been study replicating effect with computer-animated materials similar quality those used in official UK test. The also included eleven theory questions designed probe drivers' knowledge rules road. results both variants differentiated between driver groups considerable sizes. Theory-question scores were comparable across groups, reflecting learners' preparation for possible issues memory decay overwriting group. As an interesting aside, driving-related video game play negatively correlated performance, scores. Some individual hazards better suited format, raising possibility future hybrid combines two approaches.

Age, skill, and hazard perception in driving.

This study examined the effects of age and driving experience on the ability to detect hazards while driving; namely, hazard perception. Studies have shown that young-inexperienced drivers are more likely than experienced drivers to suffer from hazard perception deficiencies. However, it remains to be determined if this skill deteriorates with advancing age. Twenty-one young-inexperienced, 19 e...

Driving simulator validation with hazard perception

How should we assess the comparability of driving on a road and ‘‘driving’’ in a simulator? If similar patterns of behaviour are observed, with similar differences between individuals, then we can conclude that driving in the simulator will deliver representative results and the advantages of simulators (controlled environments, hazardous situations) can be appreciated. To evaluate a driving si...

Visual motion perception predicts driving hazard perception ability.

PURPOSE To examine the basis of previous findings of an association between indices of driving safety and visual motion sensitivity and to examine whether this association could be explained by low-level changes in visual function. METHODS A total of 36 visually normal participants (aged 19-80 years) completed a battery of standard vision tests including visual acuity, contrast sensitivity an...

Eye movements and hazard perception in active and passive driving

Differences in eye movement patterns are often found when comparing passive viewing paradigms to actively engaging in everyday tasks. Arguably, investigations into visuomotor control should therefore be most useful when conducted in settings that incorporate the intrinsic link between vision and action. We present a study that compares oculomotor behaviour and hazard reaction times across a sim...
